supporting hospital

supporting hospital

A term used in the context of the UK Department of Health’s mandate that each hospital trust in England, Wales and Northern Ireland has a major incident plan in place in the event of a natural or manmade incident (disaster). A supporting hospital is a listed hospital(s) (e.g., one that is adequately equipped to receive casualties 24/7 and provide trained personnel) that has been nominated to support the receiving hospital(s) by providing a mobile medical team as requested and taking the routine workload from the A&E department of the receiving hospital.
