Proletarii

an urban-type settlement in Novgorod Raion, Novgorod Oblast, RSFSR. Proletarii is situated on the Bol’-shaia Nisha River, 7 km from Lake Il’men’ and 30 km southeast of Novgorod. It has a porcelain factory with an attached museum, which features examples of porcelain articles.

Proletarii

(1) An illegal weekly Bolshevik newspaper, the central organ of the RSDLP. Created in 1905 by a decree of the Third Congress of the RSDLP, the newspaper was published in Geneva from May 14 (27) through Nov. 12 (25), 1905. Twenty-six issues were printed. V. I. Lenin was editor in chief. The editorial board included V. V: Vorovskii, A. V. Lunacharskii, and M. S. Ol’minskii, and the editorial staff included N. K. Krupskaia, V. M. Velichkina, V. A. Karpinskii, N. F. Nasimovich, I. A. Teodorovich, and L. A. Fotieva.

Proletarii continued the editorial policies of the Leninist newspaper Iskra and was the successor to the Bolshevik newspaper V pered. It published materials from the Third Congress of the RSDLP and about 90 of Lenin’s articles. Its circulation reached 10,000. The newspaper ceased publication after Lenin’s departure for Russia, and the last two issues came out under Vorovskii’s supervision.

(2) An illegal Bolshevik newspaper, the actual central organ of the Bolsheviks. It was published from Aug. 21 (Sept. 3), 1906, through Nov. 28 (Dec. 11), 1909; there were 50 issues in all. Numbers 1–20 were published in Vyborg, nos. 21–40 in Geneva, and nos. 41–50 in Paris. Numbers 1 and 2 were published as the organ of the Moscow and St. Petersburg committees of the RSDLP; nos. 3–1 as the organ of the Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Moscow District committees of the RSDLP; nos. 5–11 as the organ of the Moscow, St. Petersburg, Moscow District, Perm’, and Kursk committees of the RSDLP; nos. 12–20 as the organ of the Moscow, St. Petersburg, Moscow District, Kursk, Perm’, and Kazan committees of the RSDLP; and nos. 21–50 as the organ of the St. Petersburg and Moscow committees of the RSDLP.

During the years 1906–08, Proletarii was published once or twice a month; nos. 21–28 appeared weekly. In 1909 publication of the newspaper was irregular. The circulation of individual issues reached 10,000. V. I. Lenin was editor, and the editorial staff at various times included A. A. Bogdanov, I. P. Gol’denberg, and I. F. Dubrovinskii. In addition to more than 125 of Lenin’s articles and documents, Proletarii published accounts of the activity of the Central Committee of the RSDLP, decisions of conferences and plenums of the Central Committee, letters of the Central Committee on various questions of party work, and correspondence from various party centers. Publication of the paper ceased in accordance with a decision of the January 1910 Plenum of the Central Committee of the RSDLP.
