Timofeev, Petr Petrovich

Born Nov. 14, 1918, in the city of Viaz’ma, in what is now Smolensk Oblast. Soviet geologist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1976). Member of the CPSU since 1947.

Timofeev graduated from Moscow State University in 1943. In 1950 he joined the staff of the Geological Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. In 1960 he became the deputy director of the institute.

Timofeev’s main works deal with coal geology, in particular, with the genetic approach to the study of the geological formations of coal. Timofeev developed principles for the genetic classification of humic coals and devised such a classification. He proposed a method of predicting the quality of coals as a function of the characteristics of sediments and peats. He substantiated both the decisive role of the facies environment in mineral formation processes and the role of organic matter as an accelerant of such processes, especially in diagenesis.

Timofeev received the State Prize of the USSR in 1972. He has been awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor and various medals.
