Timofei Petrovich Krasnobeav

Born Feb. 21 (Mar. 5), 1865, in Smolensk; died Oct. 11, 1952, in Moscow. Soviet surgeon; one of the founders of pediatric surgery. Academician of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR (1945). Honored Scientist of the RSFSR (1935).

Krasnobaev graduated from the medical department of Moscow University in 1888. From 1919 to 1952 he was a consultant at the Tuberculosis Institute of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR and, at the same time (from 1939 to 1952), head of the surgical department of the First Moscow Pediatric Clinical Hospital, which was named after him in 1928. Krasnobaev’s works dealt with the treatment of urolithiasis, acute appendicitis, pylorospasm, and acute hematogenic osteomyelitis in children. He introduced conservative methods into the treatment of tuberculosis of the bone and joints in children. He proposed a number of new methods of treatment; he was the first in the USSR (1922) to perform an operation for congenital pylorostenosis on an infant. He created a new school of physicians—specialists in tuberculosis of the bones. Krasnobaev received the State Prize of the USSR in 1949 and was awarded two Orders of Lenin and the Order of the Red Banner of Labor.
