Promagistracy

in ancient Rome, an official state position. The promagistrates fulfilled consular, praetorial, or quaestorial duties as proconsuls, propraetors, or proquaestors beyond the limits of Rome and generally in the provinces. Before the late third century B.C., the position was usually assigned after the completion of a corresponding magistracy.
