[MIM*189961]tracheopathia osteoplastica
A segmental degenerative disorder of the tracheobronchial tree, which is characterised by multiple, variably sized submucosal cartilaginous and osseous nodules that cause upper respiratory tract narrowing. It is most common in elderly men, and may be associated with chronic inflammation or with trauma.Clinical findings
Nonspecific signs and symptoms; stridor, dyspnoea are common.
Imaging
Scalloped nodular calcified opacities in the submucosa.
Diagnosis
Endoscopy.
DiffDx
Tracheobronchomegaly and tracheomalacia, both of which demonstrate softening, flexibility or dilation of the trachea (in contrast with tracheopathia osteoplastica’s increased rigidity).
Management
If focal, nothing; significant narrowing may require laser removal and dilation, followed by regular and meticulous tracheobronchial hygiene.
