Safonovo

a city under oblast jurisdiction and administrative center of Safonovo Raion, Smolensk Oblast, RSFSR. Located on the Vopets River (Dnieper River basin). Railroad station on the Viaz’ma-Smolensk line, 102 km northeast of Smolensk. Population, 52,000 (1975). Coal is mined in Safonovo, which is located in the western Moscow Coal Basin. The city has plants for the production of instruments, electrical machinery, precast reinforced concrete, and plastics. The city has a secondary specialized polytechnic. Safonovo became a city in 1952.
