An oily phenylpropene extracted from the root-bark or the fruit of sassafras (Sassafras albidum), as well as camphor and other volatile oils. Once used as a carminative, intestinal tonic, topical antiseptic and pediculoside, it is hepatotoxic, causing fatty degeneration, and is carcinogenic; it is listed by the FDA as unsafe. |
