Sagan Setsen

Sagan Setsen

(also Ssanan Ssetsen; full name and title Sa-gang Erkhe Setsen Chungtaidschi). Born 1604; date of death unknown. Mongol chronicler. Sovereign prince in Ordos.

In 1662, Sagan Setsen wrote a long chronicle, Erdeniin tobchi (The Jeweled Button), which is an important source for the history of medieval Mongolia. Sagan Setsen sympathized with the Chahar khan Legden in the struggle against the Manchus; this gave rise to the Ordos Mongol legend of Sagan Setsen’s resistance to the Manchus and his death at the hands of a Manchu emissary.
