Shafranovskii, Ilarion
Shafranovskii, Ilarion Ilarionovich
Born Mar. 11 (24), 1907, in St. Petersburg. Soviet crystallographer. Doctor of geological and mineralogical sciences (1943); professor (1945). Honored Scientist of the RSFSR (1973).
Shafranovskii graduated from Leningrad University in 1930. In 1931 he began working at the Leningrad Institute of Mines, where he became head of the subdepartment of crystallography in 1946. He also taught at Leningrad University from 1934 to 1948.
Shafranovskii’s main works deal with crystal morphology, mineralogical crystallography, and the history of mineralogy and crystallography. Shafranovskii linked the morphology of crystals with the conditions of crystal formation and the effects of environmental symmetry. He worked out the theory of distorted crystal forms and devised the goniometric technique of describing rough diamonds.
Shafranovskii has been awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor and various medals.
