Vasilisa The Wise

Vasilisa The Wise

A character in Russian fairy tales. In most of these folktales, she is the daughter of the Sea King and is endowed with wisdom and the gift of transformation. The same female image is found under the names of Queen Mar’ia, Mar’ia Morevna, and Elena the Beautiful. M. Gorky called her one of the most perfect creations of folk fantasy. Quite another character is the unfortunate orphan Vasilisa the Beautiful, in the unique text of the A. N. Afanas’ev collection.
