Vasil’sursk is a landing on the Volga where the river is joined by the Sura. The settlement is 126 km southeast of the Kstovo railroad station. Population, 4,800 (1968). There is fishing and wood processing; the settlement also has a children’s tuberculosis sanatorium and two rest homes. Vasil’sursk is situated in a picturesque locality; landscape painters like I. I. Shishkin and I. I. Levitan worked here. The settlement was founded in 1523.
