Vaslui

 

a district in Rumania, in the basin of the Birlad River. Area, 5,300 sq km; population, 446,000 (1968), 19 percent of which is urban. Administrative center: Vaslui.

Vaslui District is located on the Moldavian highland. There are corn, wheat, sunflower, and flax crops, vegetable growing (especially in the Prut valley), and viticulture. Animal husbandry is represented mainly by cattle and sheep raising. Industry (food and textiles) is mainly connected with the processing of agricultural raw materials. The district has woodworking and metalworking enterprises, including a ballbearing plant in the city of Bîrlad.

Vaslui

 

a city in Rumania, 60 km south of Iaşi. On Jan. 17, 1475, near Vaslui the troops of the Moldavian hospodar Stephan III, consisting of 40,000 Moldavian peasants, 5,000 Hungarian soldiers, and 2,000 Polish soldiers, routed Suleiman Pasha’s Turkish army, which had 120,000 men. After this Moldavia for a while became the chief force in the struggle against Turkey.
