the prestige or 'social honour’ associated with a particular occupation of position within a community – one of three main dimensions of social stratification identified by Lockwood (1958 and 1966) and Goldthorpe and Lockwood (1968a & b, 1969). Rather than market forces or ownership or non-ownership of the means of production alone being decisive in determining a person's overall position within the stratification system, three interrelated dimensions of social stratification are seen as significant: 'status situation’, as well as WORK SITUATION and MARKET SITUATION. For example, an Anglican clergyman may enjoy relatively high status within a community, but his income (and market situation) may be low.
