A term which, as used in the NHS, refers to mutually beneficial partnerships between patients, their families and those delivering healthcare services, which respect individual needs and values and which demonstrate compassion, continuity, clear communication and shared decision making. Key to centring care around patients is that it is:• Safe—with no avoidable injury or harm to people from the healthcare they receive, and an appropriate, clean and safe environment provided for the delivery of healthcare services at all times;
• Clinically effective—appropriate in terms of treatments, interventions, support and services provided at the right time to those who will benefit, and unnecessary and ineffective care eliminated.
