Revell, Viljo Gabriel

Born Jan. 25, 1910, in Vaasa; died in November 1964 in Helsinki. Finnish architect.

In 1936, Revell graduated from the Polytechnic Institute in Helsinki. In 1952 he built a complex consisting of a hotel and offices in Helsinki. This project exemplified Finnish rationalism of the 1950’s. A leading rationalist architect, Revell was concerned with precise structural design that revealed the function and fundamental construction of a building. His most important work was the City Hall in Toronto (1965), in which orthodox rationalism was abandoned and curvilinear and rectilinear elements were boldly combined to form a plastically rich composition.
