In Saint Augustine, Florida, after it was settled by the Spanish in 1565, a two-story house with very thick walls constructed of blocks of tabby or coquina, usually roofed with hand-split cypress shingles; one room on the ground floor facing the street, with windows protected by gratings (rejas) and solid-wood interior shutters; two rooms on the upper floor, accessible by way of an exterior stairway; usually one or two balconies.
