O’Connor, Arthur

Born July 4, 1763, in Mitchelstown, County Cork; died Apr. 25, 1852, in Bignon, France. A leader of the Irish national liberation movement.

As a member of the Irish parliament from 1791 to 1795, O’Connor was a critic of English legislation for Ireland. In 1796 he joined the Society of United Irishmen, a revolutionary organization. O’Connor was arrested shortly before the Irish insurrection of 1798 but was released in 1803 and exiled to France. In 1804 he was made a general in Napoleon’s army. Subsequently he withdrew from political life. O’Connor’s views combined elements of bourgeois radicalism with moderate liberalism. He was the author of several pamphlets on the condition of Ireland.
