Location:6 miles west of Boynton Beach in southeastern Florida.
Facilities:Visitor center, boat ramp, boardwalk trails, observation tower, butterfly garden.
Activities:Boating, canoeing, fishing, hiking, biking, hunting.
Special Features:Occupying the last of the northern Everglades, the refuge provides habitat and protection for many endangered and threatened species, including the American alligator, snail kite, and wood stork.
Habitats: 147,392 acres of Everglades vegetation including cypress swamp, wet prairies, sloughs, sawgrass marshes, and tree islands.
Access: Open daily from sunrise to sunset.
Wild life: Concentrations of migratory waterfowl, migratory passerines, and wading birds. Refuge includes rookeries for several species of herons and egrets, as well as anhinga and white ibis.
