Shakhtersk

(until 1953, the settlement of Katyk), a city under oblast jurisdiction and the administrative center of Shakhtersk Raion, Donetsk Oblast, Ukrainian SSR. Railroad station (Postnikovo) on the Chernukhino-Ilovaisk line. Population, 73,000(1977).

Coal is mined near Shakhtersk, which has three coal-preparation plants. The city also has a machinery and repair plant, a knitwear factory, a bread-baking combine, and a brewery. Educational institutions include a trade technicum, a film-making technicum, and a pedagogical school.
