Pertsov, Viktor Osipovich

 

Born June 19 (July 1), 1898, in Kharkov. Soviet literary scholar and critic.

Pertsov graduated from the department of social sciences at Moscow State University in 1922. He began publishing in 1921. His first book, Tomorrow’s Literature, appeared in 1929. Pertsov is the author of Essays on Soviet Literature (1937), The Exploit and the Hero: Essays on Soviet Literature (1946), The Writer and the New Reality (1958, 2nd ed., 1961), and The Poets and Prose Writers of Great Years (1969), as well as of articles and literary portraits of many Soviet writers. His chief works deal with V. V. Mayakovsky; among them are Mayakovsky: His Life and Works (vols. 1-3, 1969-72; State Prize of the USSR, 1973). Pertsov has been awarded two orders and several medals.
