Size: 45 acres.
Established: Authorized as a national monument on June 8, 1949; redesignated on September 25, 1984.
Location:On US 1, 6 miles south of Calais, Maine. Mainland access is by either by Route 9 from Bangor or US 1, the coastal route from Portland and points south. Access to the Saint Croix Island section of the park is by private boat only.
Facilities:Picnic area, rest rooms (é), boat ramp. No federal facilities.
Activities:Hiking, interpretive programs (seasonal).
Special Features:The only designated international historic site in the National Park Service is a monument to the beginning of the United States and Canada. The attempted French settlement of 1604, which led to the founding of New France, is commemorated on Saint Croix Island in the Saint Croix River on the Canadian border.
