The printing industry is also important. The city grew around a monastery founded in the 7th cent. In World War II the Germans destroyed many of Saint-Dié's landmarks and deported much of the population. The Cosmographiae introductio by Martin Waldseemüller, a geographic work that for the first time referred to the newly discovered continent as America, was printed in Saint-Dié in 1507.
