Supung

(so͞o`po͝ong), dam on the Yalu River, on the border between North Korea and Liaoning prov., NE China. One of the largest dams in Asia (525 ft/160 m high and 2,800 ft/853 m long), it was built by the Japanese occupation forces in 1941. Its enormous supply of hydroelectric power is now shared by nearby North Korean and Chinese industrial areas.

a city in the People’s Democratic Republic of Korea, in Pyongang-pukto Province. Situated on the Amnok River (Chinese, Yalu River) near the Chinese border. Population, approximately 50,000. The Supung Hydroelectric Power Plant, with a capacity of 700 megawatts, is situated at a dam built across the narrowest part of the Amnok River.
