Peshnia

 

a percussive, pikelike implement with an iron or steel head that is approximately Vi m long, weighs 2 to 4 kg, and comes to a sharp point. The head has a belled mouth, into which a wooden handle of up to 1 m in length is inserted. The peshnia is used primarily in the northern USSR for making holes in ice during winter fishing, for breaking the ice around a vessel left in the water for the winter, and sometimes for breaking rock and digging. It is used in hunting to kill walruses, white whales, and seals.
