Sokolov, Fedor Fedorovich

 

Born 1841; died June 1 (14), 1909. Russian historian, philologist, and epigraphist. Professor of ancient history and classical philology at the University of St. Petersburg from 1884 and the St. Petersburg History and Philology Institute from 1870.

Sokolov was the founder of the Russian school of epigraphy and trained V. V. Latyshev, A. V. Nikitskii, N. I. Novosadskii, V. K. Ernshtedt, and S. A. Zhebelvev. He is the author of a large number of works on ancient history, mainly the Hellenistic era, and on classical philology and epigraphy.
