Sokolov, Vladimir Evgen’evich.

 

Born Feb. 1,1928, in Moscow. Soviet zoologist. Academician of the Sciences of the USSR (1974; corresponding member, 1970). Member of the CPSU since 1956.

Sokolov graduated from the biology department of Moscow State University in 1950. From 1953 to 1956 he worked at the Moscow Institute of the Fish-Processing Industry. In 1956 he joined the subdepartment of vertebrate zoology at Moscow State University, becoming a professor in 1966. In 1967, Sokolov became director and a laboratory head of the A. N. Severtsov Institute of Evolutionary Morphology and Animal Ecology of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. In 1973 he became president of the All-Union Theriologic Society.

Sokolov’s principal works deal with ecological morphology, hydrobionics, ecology, and mammalian taxonomy and chemical communication.

Sokolov received the A. N. Severtsov Prize of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in 1975.
