Sokolov, Vladislav Gennadievich

Born Dec. 15 (28), 1908, in Rybinsk. Soviet choral director. Honored Artist of the USSR (1966).

In 1936, Sokolov graduated from the choir-conducting department of Moscow Conservatory, where he studied under G. A. Dmitrevskii. That year he became artistic director of the children’s chorus of the Central House of Children’s Artistic Education (today, the Institute of Artistic Education of the Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of the USSR). From 1946 to 1952 he was chorus master of the A. V. Aleksandrov Order of the Red Banner Song and Dance Ensemble of the Soviet Army; in 1956 he became artistic director of the State Moscow Chorus. He has taught music since 1929 at various schools, including the Central Music School and at Moscow Conservatory, where he has been a professor in the choir-conducting subdepartment since 1951 and the subdepartment head from 1957 to 1960. He is responsible for many choral arrangements and is the author of Work With the Chorus (1959).

Sokolov has been awarded the Order of Lenin, the Order of the Badge of Honor, and various medals.
