proprioceptor neuromuscular facilitation stretching

proprioceptor neuromuscular facilitation stretching

A stretching technique that re-educates muscles by “tricking” the proprioceptors into allowing increased ranges of motion by reducing the tensing of the muscles that normally occurs at the preset limits to the range of motion; the technique consists of stretching the muscle to a comfortable limit followed by having the client tense the muscle during the stretch, which slightly increases the range of motion. PNF stretching increases muscle flexibility, and is of use in sports massage.
