St. DenisSt. Denisthe capital and major city of the island of Réunion. Population, 94,100 (1971). St. Denis is linked by rail with Pointe-des-Galets, the island’s chief port. It has enterprises for the production of sugar and rum. There are museums of natural history and art studies in the city. St. Denis was founded in 1671. St. Denisa city in France, on the Seine River, in the department of Seine-St. Denis. Population, 100,000 (1968). A northern suburb of Paris, St. Denis has metallurgy, machine-building (automobiles, aircraft, machine tools, river vessels), chemical (plastics, dyes, pharmaceuticals, perfumes, fertilizers), glass, and food-processing industries. Architectural monuments include the abbey church of St. Denis, whose architecture greatly influenced the development of the Gothic style (architect P. de Montereau and others; 1137–44; restored since the 18th century). Beginning in the 13th century the church was the burial place of the French kings. The abbey building (rebuilt in the 18th century, architect J. A. Gabriel and others) is also noteworthy. Outstanding examples of modern architecture in the city include a number of residential complexes built between 1946 and 1962 by architect A. Lurçat (for example, the Paul Langevin complex).
