A northern suburb of Paris, St. Denis has metallurgy, machine-building (automobiles, aircraft, machine tools, river vessels), chemical (plastics, dyes, pharmaceuticals, perfumes, fertilizers), glass, and food-processing industries.

Architectural monuments include the abbey church of St. Denis, whose architecture greatly influenced the development of the Gothic style (architect P. de Montereau and others; 1137–44; restored since the 18th century). Beginning in the 13th century the church was the burial place of the French kings. The abbey building (rebuilt in the 18th century, architect J. A. Gabriel and others) is also noteworthy. Outstanding examples of modern architecture in the city include a number of residential complexes built between 1946 and 1962 by architect A. Lurçat (for example, the Paul Langevin complex). St. Denis has a municipal museum of history and art, which has a notable collection of Romanesque and Gothic art.
