Petar Kocic

Kočić, Petar

Born June 29, 1877, in Stričići, Bosnia; died Aug. 27, 1916, in Belgrade. Serbian writer.

Kočić studied Slavic philology at the University of Vienna. He was persecuted by the Austro-Hungarian authorities. He taught in a secondary school in Skopje. Kočić entered Serbian literature as an outstanding short-story writer and satirist; his works include the collections of stories From the Mountains and the Foothills (1902–05) and Groans From Zmijanja (1910), the satirical play The Badger Before the Court (1904), and the satirical tale Fate (1912). Kočić’s writing is devoted to the tragic fate of the Bosnian peasantry, tormented under the Turkish yoke, feudal exploitation, and the terrorism of the Austro-Hungarian authorities.
