Petasites
Petasites (also, butterbur), a genus of perennial herbs of the family Compositae. The butterbur is a plant with an unclearly expressed dioecism, often flowering after the leaves are out. There are a total of five or six species in the northern hemisphere, found in the temperate regions and as far as the subarctic region along sandy river banks and lake shores. In the USSR there are three species with creeping rhizomes, large radical leaves, and reduced stem leaves. In the butterbur’s immature state, the leaves are usually covered with a whitish fuzz, especially on their undersides (hence the Russian name belokopytnik, or “white hoof grass”).
