Peter Andreas Heiberg

Heiberg, Peter Andreas

Born Nov. 16, 1758, in Vording-borg; died Apr. 30, 1841, in Paris. Danish writer.

In his novel The Adventures of a One-Rigsdaler Banknote (1787–93), Heiberg criticized the Danish social order. In his satirical verse, ballads, and comedies he mocked petit bourgeois morality and, especially in These “Vons” and “Vans” (1792), class prejudice. Exiled in 1799 for antigovernment activities, Heiberg lived in Paris from 1800 until his death.
