Peter I Island

an island in the Bellingshausen Sea, 400 km from Marie Byrd Land, Antarctica. Peter I Island has an area of approximately 250 sq km. Of volcanic origin, it is composed mainly of basalts and is almost entirely covered by an ice sheet. Lars Christensen Peak (1,200 m) is its highest point. Discovered in 1821 by the Russian expedition led by F. F. Bellingshausen and M. P. Lazarev, the island was named in honor of Tsar Peter I.
