Aizu-Wakamatsu

(Wakamatsu, Yanaizu), city in Japan in the northern part of Honshu Island in Fukushima Prefecture. The population was 102,000 in 1965.

Aizu-wakamatsu is a transportation junction and center of the rice-growing region of the Aizu basin. Power-consuming branches of industry, such as nonferrous metallurgy (zinc, lead, cadmium, and others) are built around the power base (a hydroelectric power station on the Tadami River). Other industry includes textiles (cotton spinning), woodworking, and food and condiments enterprises. Aizu-wakamatsu has a state forest preserve and hot springs, and it is a summer health resort and center for tourism. Its products include lacquered goods.
