Shaohsing

a city in East China, in Chekiang Province. Population, 170,000 (1953). Shaohsing has a landing on the canal that links Hangchou with Yüyao; it also has a railroad station on the Hangchou-Ningpo line. The city has tea-curing and rice-polishing plants; other industry includes the production of rice wine, silk fabrics, paper, and tinfoil.
