Solarizationsolarization[‚sō·lə·rə′zā·shən]Solarizationin photography, a phenomenon arising when a photographic material undergoes an extreme amount of over-exposure: the greater the exposure, the less the density of the blackening of the material upon development. For the moderate exposures ordinarily used in photography, by contrast, the density increases with the exposure time. Solarization is a result of the oxidation of latent-image centers by neutral bromine atoms. Under great exposures, these neutral atoms are formed in substantial concentrations within the microcrystals of the photographic emulsion and rise to the surface of the crystals (the rebromination process). solarization
