The efforts of the grand prince of Vladimir, Mikhail Iaroslavich of Tver’, to designate his own candidate for metropolitan led to a protracted conflict with Petr, who resorted to the help of the princes of Moscow. Petr’s alliance with Moscow led to the consolidation of his position and the rise of the house of Moscow. He transferred the metropolitan see from Vladimir to Moscow, where he acquired and was granted considerable amounts of land. He laid the foundations of the Uspenie Cathedral in Moscow. Petr was the author of a number of sermons and pastoral letters and was an iconographer. He was canonized by the Russian church.
