Petr built the St. George Cathedral (begun in 1119) at the Iur’ev Monastery in Novgorod. Other Novgorod cathedrals attributed to him are the Nikolo-Dvorishche Cathedral, situated in the market area (begun in 1113), and the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Virgin, located in the Monastery of St. Anthony (begun in 1117).

Petr was born in southwestern Rus’. He founded a monastery on the River Rat’, where he became the father superior. With the support of Prince Iurii L’vovich of Galich, Petr was designated metropolitan of Rus’ by the patriarch of Constantinople in 1308. The efforts of the grand prince of Vladimir, Mikhail Iaroslavich of Tver’, to designate his own candidate for metropolitan led to a protracted conflict with Petr, who resorted to the help of the princes of Moscow. Petr’s alliance with Moscow led to the consolidation of his position and the rise of the house of Moscow. He transferred the metropolitan see from Vladimir to Moscow, where he acquired and was granted considerable amounts of land. He laid the foundations of the Uspenie Cathedral in Moscow. Petr was the author of a number of sermons and pastoral letters and was an iconographer. He was canonized by the Russian church.
