solar plexus

solar plexus,

dense cluster of nerve cells and supporting tissue, located behind the stomach in the region of the celiac artery just below the diaphragm. It is also known as the celiac plexus. Rich in ganglia and interconnected neurons, the solar plexus is the largest autonomic nerve center in the abdominal cavity (see nervous systemnervous system,
network of specialized tissue that controls actions and reactions of the body and its adjustment to the environment. Virtually all members of the animal kingdom have at least a rudimentary nervous system.

). Through branches it controls many vital functions such as adrenal secretion and intestinal contraction. Popularly, the term "solar plexus" may refer to the pit of the stomach. A blow to that area, if it penetrates to the true solar plexus, not only causes great pain but may also temporarily halt visceral functioning.

Solar Plexus

(also celiac plexus), in humans, the aggregate of neural elements concentrated in the abdominal cavity at the origins of the celiac and superior mesenteric arteries. The solar plexus includes the paired celiac ganglia, the unpaired superior mesenteric ganglion, and numerous nerves that run from the ganglia in various directions in a manner resembling the sun’s rays (whence the name). The ganglia of the solar plexus consist of nerve cells with many processes. The branches of the preganglionic fibers, which pass without interruption through the ganglia of the neighboring sympathetic trunk, terminate in synapses on the bodies and processes of the nerve cells. In addition to sensory and parasympathetic fibers, the nerves of the solar plexus contain many postganglionic sympathetic fibers, which are processes of the ganglion cells of the solar plexus and which innervate the glands and musculature of the vessels of the diaphragm, gastrointestinal tract, spleen, kidneys, adrenals, and other organs.

solar plexus

solar plexus

a network of ganglia and nerves in the center of the abdomen, part of the autonomic nervous system and important in control of function of the liver, stomach, kidneys, and adrenal glands. A blow to it may cause great pain or render a person unconscious, because the organs are momentarily thrown out of gear. Although the plexus recovers quickly from this, its effects on the body as a whole last longer. Called also celiac plexus.

ce·li·ac (nerve) plex·us

[TA] the most substantial, superior portion of the abdominal aortic plexus lying anterior to the aorta at the level of origin of the celiac trunk (vertebral level T-12); the celiac ganglia lie within the plexus; it is formed by contributions from the greater splanchnic and vagus (especially the posterior or right vagus) nerves and communicating branches to and from the superior mesenteric and renal plexuses and ganglia; most sympathetic, parasympathetic and visceral afferent fibers serving the abdominal viscera pass through this plexus. Synonym(s): plexus coeliacus [TA], plexus (nervosus) celiacus [TA], solar plexus

solar plexus

A large network of autonomic nerves situated behind the stomach, around the coeliac artery. It incorporates branches of the VAGUS NERVE and the splanchnic nerves and sends branches to most of the abdominal organs. Also known as the coeliac plexus. The term derives from the sun-like appearance of the radiating branches.
