Trade Descriptions Acts 1968 and 1972

Trade Descriptions Acts 1968 and 1972

a UK Act (1968) which makes it an offence to apply a false or misleading description to a GOOD or SERVICE and a false or misleading indication as to the PRICE of a good or service. The term ‘trade description’ is defined broadly to include, for example, quantity, size of gauge, composition, fitness for purpose, performance, strength, accuracy, method of manufacture, place and date of manufacture, etc. Offenders can be punished by a fine or imprisonment. The Act is administered by local authority WEIGHTS AND MEASURES officials, in conjunction with the DEPARTMENT OF TRADE AND INDUSTRY and the OFFICE OF FAIR TRADING, which keeps a central register of convictions.

The 1972 Act requires that certain imported products should have their country of origin clearly displayed. See CONSUMER PROTECTION, PRICE MARKING (BARGAIN OFFERS) ORDER 1979, CONSUMER PROTECTION ACT 1987.
