Sakata

 

a city and port in Japan, on the northwestern coast of Honshu, at the mouth of the Mogami River, in Yamagata Prefecture. Population, 97,000 (1972).

Sakata plays an important role in the Soviet-Japanese coastal trade. Metallurgical, chemical, and machine-building plants are located in the coastal area of Sakata. The city also has pulp-and-paper and lumber-processing industry. Aluminum-smelting and electric power enterprises were under construction as of 1975. There are rice storehouses. Sakata is a seaside resort. Hi-yeriyama Park and the Homma Art Museum are located in the city.
