Tarumae

Tarumae

 

an active volcano in the caldera of Shikotsu, in the southwestern part of the island of Hokkaido, Japan. Tarumae, which rises to an elevation of 1,024 m, is in the form of a cone, whose crater is up to 1,200 m in diameter; there is a nested volcanic cone within the crater. A dome was formed in 1909 in the crater of the small cone. Since 1667 there have been more than 20 eruptions, the most recent eruption in 1951. Shikotsu-toya National Park is located in the region of Tarumae.
