Tashkurghan

(also Khulm), a city in northern Afghanistan. Population, about 30,000 (1966, estimate). Tashkurghan is the commercial and transportation center of an oasis irrigated by the Khulm River. Grain, fruit, grapes, cotton, and melons are grown in the region. Industries include flour milling and cotton processing. The population also engages in cottage industries and carpet weaving.
