Regrouping of Forces

the organized transfer of groupings of land, air, or naval forces from one region to another.

Depending on the purpose and dimensions of the transfer, a regrouping of forces may be strategic, operational, or tactical. The strategic regrouping of forces includes the regrouping of the forces of the armed services along new strategic axes or to new military theaters, for instance, the regrouping of the Soviet troops from Eastern Europe to the Far East in 1945. The operational regrouping of forces is carried out during preparation for operations or during their implementation. Tactical regroupings take place in combat.

A regrouping of forces is carried out in order to reinforce already existing groupings or to create new ones, to repel an enemy offensive, to exploit the success of an offensive, to transfer efforts to new axes, or to replenish second echelons (reserves). In a regrouping of forces, operational commands or large units move either by their own means of locomotion or are transported by rail, water, or air.
