Refers to over-the-counter trading. Having sold stock to another dealer before making the present offering.

Selling Away

1. The act of a broker seeking to sell a client a security not offered by the brokerage. This is usually part of a private placement. Except in limited circumstances, selling away is illegal.

2. The act of a broker selling a client's security without the client's authorization.
