Vostochnyi Range

Vostochnyi Range

a mountain system in eastern Kamchatka, uplifted by very recent movements and consisting of a number of individual ranges with steep western slopes and more gently sloping eastern sides. Length, 600 km; width, 60 km.

The southern part of the Vostochnyi Range (the Ganal’skii Range) is a horst massif with a jagged crest (elevation, 2,277 m); it is composed of gneisses, Proterozoic and Lower Paleozoic crystalline shales, and younger granites and effusions. The main part of the range, which consists of Cenozoic folds, is the eastern Kamchatka anticlinorium, which is composed of Upper Cretaceous sedimentary and volcanic rock (basalts and tufas). Near the junction of the Balaginskii Range (1,794 m) and the Tumrok Range, the Vostochnyi Range is bisected by the southern Kamchatka zone of recent and continuing volcanic activity (for example, the Kizimen volcano, 2,485 m). The Shish volcano (elevation, 2,346 m) has built up on the northern Kumroch Range, which is cut through by the gorge of the Kamchatka River. On the slopes there are park forests and shrubbery (alder, Japanese stone pine, and rhododendron).

(2) A mountain range in the eastern part of the Shmidt Peninsula. Length, 50 km; width, 14 km. The elevation is 300-500 m, and the highest point reaches 623 m (the peak Vtoroi Brat of the Tri-Brata group).
