underway sampler

[¦ən·dər¦wā ′sam·plər] (engineering) A device for collecting samples of sediment on the ocean bottom, consisting of a cup in a hollow tube; on striking the bottom, the cup scoops up a small sample which is forced into the tube which is then closed with a lid, and the device is hoisted to the surface. Also known as scoopfish; underway bottom sampler.
