Petrosian, Georg Ovsepovich

(also G. O. Ter-Petrosian). Born Nov. 11 (23), 1859, in Ordubad; died Oct. 28 (Nov. 10), 1906, in Nakhichevan’-na-Donu. Armenian actor, director, and theatrical figure.

Petrosian began his stage career in 1881 at the Tbilisi Armenian Theater. From 1883 to 1890 he acted in Moscow and St. Petersburg. In 1891 he became head of an Armenian troupe organized in Tbilisi. Petrosian attempted to improve the Armenian theater and introduce the methods of the Russian theatrical school. He successfully performed in such dramatic and tragic character roles as Elizbarov in Shirvanzade’s Because of Honor, the title role in Sundukian’s Pepo, the Mayor in Gogol’s The Inspector-General, Arbenin in Lermontov’s Masquerade, and Petruchio, Shylock, Othello, and Lear in Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew, The Merchant of Venice, Othello, and King Lear
