Petrovichev, Petr Ivanovich

Born Dec. 6 (18), 1874, in the village of Vysokovo, in present-day Yaroslavl Oblast; died Jan. 4, 1947, in Moscow. Soviet landscape painter.

From 1892 to 1903, Petrovichev studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture with I. I. Levi-tan and V. A. Serov. He was a member of the peredvizhniki (the “wanderers”—a progressive art movement) from 1906 to 1912. He joined the Society of Russian Artists in 1911, with whom he had exhibited since 1905. Petrovichev’s works affirm the poetic beauty of the Russian landscape and pre-Petrine architecture. His free impasto brushwork and his somewhat subdued, “dusky” palette impart to his landscapes a certain severity. Among Petrovichev’s works are Rostov the Great (1912, Russian Museum, Leningrad) and River in Autumn (1926, Tret’iakov Gallery).
