Saldanha
Saldanha
a bay on the Atlantic coast of South Africa, in the Republic of South Africa. In 1953 the skullcap and a fragment of the lower jaw of ancient man were found 25 km east of Saldanha Bay, near the city of Hopefield. Stone implements dating from the Lower Paleolithic period (late Acheulean) and the bones of animal fossils were also found. On the basis of his skull structure, the Saldanha Bay man resembles the Palaeoanthropus from Broken Hill. Together they form a distinct group of ancient man in South Africa. It has not been determined when the Saldanha Bay man existed.
